Proofreading
If you want a straightforward proofread, I charge ¼ p per word. This means that an 80,000 word book will cost you £200. (Price converted to other currencies at the time of agreement.) This will involve no ‘editing’ as such - just corrections of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Putting a price on writing advice is notoriously difficult. It’s possible to charge by the word or by the page. It’s possible that one kind of writing might be more ‘difficult’ to proofread or edit than another, requiring more time and therefore more expense.
For these reasons my costing process is flexible.
Copy editing
For a more complete copy edit that includes suggestions for rewording, pointing out of duplicate words or general repetitions as well as corrections to grammar, spelling and punctuation, the charge will be ½ p per word. So an 80,000 word book will cost £400.
Book editing
A comprehensive edit that looks at the whole work, makes suggestions about character development, plot problems, consistency and general structuring. Costs are agreed on a project basis and quotations are based on the length of the work and its complexity.
Copywriting
Advertising, website copy or elearning design is charged at an hourly rate that is negotiable. Typically this works out at a daily rate of about £400.
Payment is preferably via PayPal, though other options are available on request. Half is payable on agreement, the rest on satisfactory completion.
